Types of Heavy Machinery Used In Construction

Heavy Construction Equipment

Heavy machinery plays a critical role in the construction process. Each construction equipment is designed to serve a particular purpose and contributes positively to the final result.
Therefore, efficient and effective means of increasing the rate of output while reducing the overall cost and speeding up the progress of work requires you to invest in the right equipment.
Some of the popular construction equipment based on purpose are listed below-

Equipment For Earth-Moving

1. Excavator

An excavator is a piece of heavy machinery equipment that is used to dig up the earth. It has a central rotating platform known as the house, which is attached to the dipper, bucker, boom and cab and is balanced in wheels or tracks.

2. Dozer

A dozer or a bulldozer works primarily like a crawler with a metal plate or blade and pushes raw material in large quantities within the construction site.

3. Wheel Loader

A wheel loader is a mobile shovel that is used to transfer the content of the stockpile onto a truck. Depending on the bucket size, the amount of materials transferred can vary.

4. Motor Grader

A motor grader is used to precisely finish off the rough grading done by bulldozers and scrapers. Apart from shaping the ground, a grader also assists in spreading lose material on the earth.

5. Piling Rig

A piling rig is a drilling tool which is used to dig up the earth. There are three types of pilling rings:

  • Small Rig
  • Medium Rig
  • Large Rig

Depending upon the working environment, pilling rigs can be used for engineering constructions.

6. Skid Steer Loader

A skid steer loader is multi-purpose equipment, which uses mechanically synchronised, locked wheels on each side to tear up the ground using skidding motion. The rigid frame prevents the forces produced due to dragging from negatively affecting the machine.

Vehicle for Construction

1. Dumper

A dumper is used to transfer bulk materials on the construction site. It uses a skip to carry the load of loose materials employing hydraulics. The dumper tips the skip to drop the load.

2. Transit Mixer

A Transit Mixer allows smooth transfer of concrete from the batch plant to the construction site. It is filled with dry materials and water that are churned employing the blades.

The blades move in two directions, the clockwise direction charges the drum with concrete, while the anticlockwise rotation discharges the concrete out of the transit drum. This ensures that the concrete is in liquid form when it reaches the requested construction location.

Equipment for Handling Materials

1. Material Hoist

A material hoist assists in the vertical transportation of materials in construction sites. Advanced material hoists come with several safety devices as well as the self-erecting mechanism, and are very cost-effective.

2. Passenger Hoist

In large construction sites and high rises, a passenger hoist comes as a boon in transporting people from one place to another. These elevators are robust and sturdy and are equipped to withstand harsh conditions.

3. MCW Platform

A Mast Climbing Work or MCW platform is designed to aid the process of going up and down construction sites quickly. It is a cost and time-efficient solution for both workers and materials.

4. Batching Plant

A batching plant helps in the creation of concrete by mixing up of various raw materials. It speeds up the production process and can fit perfectly, even in thin plot sizes.

5. Weight Bridge

A set of scales designed to weigh heavy items is called a weigh bridge. It uses an Electronic or Digital monitor to display the readings. It is ideal for weighing the entire truckload of materials at the time of moving from one location to another.

A weighbridge is extensively used in the mining, electrical equipment, powder, iron and steel, liquid and household goods industries, which move supplies in bulk.

Equipment for Construction

1. Tower Crane

A tower crane is used for lifting lower materials horizontally. It is a useful alternative for intensive manual labour as it assures easy lifting of heavy items as well as their movement to the desired location.

2. Concrete Pump

A concrete pump is a heavy machinery apparatus that is used for pumping and transferring liquid concrete on the construction site as required.

3. Diesel Generator

A DG or Diesel Generator has a diesel engine with an electrical generator. Having a DG set at a construction site does away with the hassles of lack of power. The dependable power source can act as an emergency power supply or a standby electrical source.

4. Mobile Boom Placer

The mobile boom placer does away the cumbersome activity of pipeline stacking and speeds up the process of concrete set up while reducing work costs and downtime. It is ideal for huge ventures such as airport irrigation, skyscrapers, metros, etc., which involves decent investment and crunched timelines.

5. Static Boom Placer

A static boom placer is ideal for the construction of high rises. It uses a static pump, which is connected to the vertical pump and pushes the solid into the pump, which goes through the entire boom placer. At the topmost part, there is a full circle or 360-degree rotation, which helps disperse concrete all around.

Heavy Machinery aids in eliminating the need for intensive manual work. It helps maintain a planned production rate without depending on skilled and unskilled labour. This ensures that the construction process is economically viable and is at par with the guaranteed standard of quality.
